The Department of History and Philology of the Far East of the Institute for Oriental and Classical Studies  was created in 2004 and is aimed to educate students in a wide range of topics. We expect after graduation our students are able to teach Oriental-related subjects, language and can also make scientific researches in the relevant fields. The purpose of the Department is not only to give deep and classical education but also to preserve and support the traditions of the Russian Oriental Studies started in the XIX-XX centuries and to promote them on the international level.

The faculty members of the Department specialize in literature, history, culture and languages of such countries of the Far Eastern region as China, Korea, Vietnam, Thailand and Laos. The major “Language and Literature of Korea” was created in 2005, and the head of it is PhD in philology Elena Kondratyeva.

The current faculty members who educate Korea-related disciplines are Elena N. Kondratyeva, Evgeniya V. Вrechalova, Anastasiya V. Pogadaeva, Ekaterina S. Logunova and Nataliya A. Chesnokova. During the previous years, at the Department had also worked such famous Koreanists as Tatyana M. Simbirtseva, Lev R. Kontsevich, Sergei V. Volkov, Pavel S. Leshakov, Victoria V. Pirozhenko, Andrei S. Vozdvizhenskiy and etc. Foreign Koreanists, among whom Andrei N. Lankov and Vladimir M. Tikhonov, gave guest lectures on history, culture and literature of Korea.

Our lecturers are members of international Korean organizations, such as AKSE and KSGSC, and of Russian Korea-related organizations too. We are supported by Korea Foundation and cooperate with universities in Republic of Korea.

Our educational programs are aimed at fundamental education in human science at whole and a broad range of Korea-related disciplines in particular. Thus we give our graduate students almost unlimited opportunities to work in all areas, in one way or another connected with Korea or Korean studies.

The educational process pays special attention to teaching the first and the second Eastern languages (nowadays they are Korean and Japanese languages). Apart from it, since the second year of study our students learn Hanja and read Hanmun texts.

During the four years of study our students learn Korean Linguistics, History of Korean literature, Korean Grammar, Lexicology, Dialectology, History of Korean language, Korean folklore studies, Korean history, Korean geography, Korean ethnography, Korean ethnology, Korean economics, Korean culture, Korean philosophy and etc In Hanmun lectures and in Korean language lectures students deal with the original texts written in Hanmun, Modern Korean or Pre-modern Korean languages.

Our students regularly take part in international and Russian competitions aimed at estimating the level of Korean language and knowledge of Korea-related topics; in international and Russian conferences and workshops. 67% of our graduate students went on studying Korea. They teach Korean language and Korea-related subjects, make researches; work in international companies. Some of our students went to Korea to get there their PhDs.

In 2013 The Workshop for Young Koreanists (Семинар студентов-корееведов) was founded with the support from Korea Foundation. The Workshop is held on the basis on the Department of History and Philology of the Far East. It was made to help students get a piece of advice from famous Koreanists, to take part in the discussions without any fear, to – what is most important – present their own researches to the public and to share their views. The Workshop helps to build continuity of Koreanists not only in the Department but in Russia in whole, and we expect to make the Workshop international.

Korean Studies at RSUH are young, but it is impossible to ignore its positive tendency and already existing achievements. The faculty members work hard to educate younger generations of Koreanists who can use in the full measure their knowledge and build strong and powerful connections to the Far Eastern countries and Korea in particular.

In 2015 the Department of History and Philology of the Far East became a member of Russian Association of Universities for Academic Korean Studies (РАУК).
