At the end of October, the preparation for publication of a new book by Andrei Nikolaevich Lankov was completed. The title is "Korea: A Breakthrough into Modernity".

The publication project was initiated by the Information and Cultural Center "KIM" (Korea and We), which is well known in Russia for publishing an online magazine of the same name (registered in the Republic of Korea).

The publication was prepared with the assistance of the Center for Korean Studies (Novosibirsk State University).
The book was released by the Publishing House of the Institute of Archeology and Ethnography of the Siberian Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences. The print run is 2,000 copies.

Korea is a neighboring country of Russia, but we happen to have surprisingly little knowledge about Korea. However, the history of recent centuries in Korea has been filled with turbulent events and titanic changes. A small kingdom in a far-flung corner of Eurasia first turned into a colony of its warlike neighbor, Japan, then regained independence, and finally, after going through years of factional violence, became one of the most interesting countries in the world, a country with a dynamic economy. This book describes how these extraordinary changes have impacted the lives of ordinary Koreans. Readers will learn how Korean food and clothing changed over time, how the first newspapers and trains appeared in Korea, how Korean oligarchs earned their first millions, how Koreans developed their fondness for beer and coffee - and much, much more. The book consists of short essays, each of which focuses on one certain aspect of Korean everyday life over the past two centuries.
