как сообщил дискуссионный сайт корееведов, в начале августа 2011 г. скончался Кеннет Гардинер (1932-2011), один из пионеров австралийского корееведения. Посвящаю это письмо его памяти. Мне хотелось бы привлечь внимание к его докторской диссертации, которая была представлена на том же сайте видным американским библиографом восточноазиатских исследований Франком Шульманом. Привожу его библиосправку ниже. Она посвящена истории Когурё – теме, которая постоянно привлекает внимание отечественных исследователей. Хотелось бы, чтобы данная работа не осталась вне их внимания. Написанная высокообразованным специалистом с иных, чем принято в русской научной школе позиций, она, как представляется, сохраняет свое значение и сегодня.

This dissertation is a chronologically arranged synthesis of Korea's earliest history, starting from before the Han conquest in 108 B.C., in which Gardiner "brought together what was known (as of 1964) or could be surmised about the early development of Koguryŏ (Goguryeo) until that kingdom succeeded in overrunning the last Chinese commanderies in Korea". Analyzing and comparing all available written sources including brief accounts and references in the Chinese dynastic histories and "legendary material retold in Sino-Korean chronicles", he indicated some of the possible variations in the interpretations and hypotheses regarding social, economic, and cultural activities on the Korean Peninsula and traced Koguryŏ's changing relations with China as the kingdom expanded its power. Gardiner did not attempt, however, to "write any kind of continuous history of the beginnings of Koguryŏ?".
